We drove to Muskegon and met at the Submarine in the Muskegon river channel, ordered some pizza for dinner, then was given a 45 minute tour of the Submarine. Then we went and got our sleeping bags and pillows and claimed our "Rack". Everyone searched around the sub for all the neat things to play with and look at, some of us went outside and made a campfire in the small park on shore next to the sub, and some of us watched Submarine war movies down below. The adults were on ½ hour watch schedules through the night ensuring noone went for an early morning swim. Most of us got about 2-4 hours sleep. In the morning we made coffee and everyone cleaned up and took pictures. Went to breakfast at a local cafe'. 18 of us went camping from there at the White River Campground about 15 miles north of there. The other 11 or so had to go back to Chelsea.
The camping trip was not an official scouting trip, but was still a learning experience for the campers, as many of them had not been camping either "Ever" or in many years! Plus we got about an inch of rain in about 5 hours on Fri. just after setting up! We got pretty wet, the kids got VERY wet, and spent a couple hours inside the Cubmasters pop-up getting warm! (I knew there was a good reason for bringing that thing!) After the rain stopped at about 5:00 pm, the sun came out, and we had a great fire by the river, the boys fished in the river, and we cooked dinner there also. That night was clear and chilly, and Sat. morning was nice also. We gathered at the river again for breakfast, cleaned up, and went on a 2 hour canoe trip down the white river that ended right at our campground! Nobody got wet, and it was a beautiful and peaceful ride. After that, all of us except Dave, Eric and Danny Best packed it up and hit the road (about 4:00pm). The Best family stayed one more night and came home Sunday.
Great trip! Ask any one !!!
